Before achieving the designation as a licensed life, accident and sickness insurance broker, candidates have to comply with the state requirements and pass the appropriate licensing exam.
Georgia Licensing Education Requirements
Prospective agents for life, accident and sickness must take 40 hours of pre-licensing classes from a state approved education provider. Applicants have the option of taking the courses online or in a traditional classroom setting. Organizations such as the Agent/Broker Training Center (Abtrainingcenter.com) or Learn Insurance (Learninsurance.com) offer the necessary pre-licensing courses. The cost for the pre-licensing education vary and applicants should compare the education packets and pricing of several providers before registering.
State Insurance Licensing Exam
After completing the necessary pre-licensing course hours, candidates for the life, accident and sickness insurance license must make an appointment to take the state licensing exam. The state of Georgia processes all of its state insurance exams through a company called Pearson Vue. Exams can be scheduled online by visiting the PearsonVue website or calling them at 1-800-274-0488.
As of this writing, candidates have a choice of six testing locations. Test centers are located in Albany, Atlanta South, Augusta, Macon, Marietta and Savannah.
Education and State Exam Exemptions
Candidates who have a current Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) or Fellow, Life Management Institute (FLMI) designation are exempt from taking the 40 class hours and taking the exam. Similarly, agents who move to the state of Georgia and have a valid life, accident and sickness license from their home state are also exempt from the pre-licensing and exam requirements as long as they apply for the Georgia license within 90 days of moving to Georgia.
Applying for the Life, Accident and Sickness License
After successfully passing the state life, accident and sickness state exam, candidates must complete the three-page Resident Insurance License Application, have it notarized and returned to the Office of Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner along with the appropriate processing fee (as of this writing the application fee is $75). Applicants must make sure to attach all required backup documentation because failure to do so will delay the license issuance.
Insurance agents who are exempt from taking the pre-licensing course/exam must enclose a copy of the designation or an original clearance letter from the prior home state along with the application.
Licensing Term and Requirements
Life, accident and sickness insurance agents in the state of Georgia must take continuing education credits during the term of licensure (licenses remain in effect for two years and expires the last day of the licensee’s birth month). The number of credits depends on the type of license and the length of licensure. In general, life, accident and sickness agents who have held a license for 20 years or more are required to take 10 hours of continuing education. Agents with less than 20 years must take 15 hours. However, agents with certain designations or who are taking approved college/university courses may not be required to take the full 10 or 15 course hours.
